abstract = "The road maintenance and the concern about the logistics of the
timber transportation have great impact on the productive process
of a forestry company, since the coast of the road and transport
weight with great significance on the final value of the timber.
Therefore, the use of tools such as Geographic Information Systems
(GIS) has shown great importance in optimizing the forest
transport. The objective of this study is to use the Network
Analyst tool to trace the optimal routes to trace the shorter
distance between the sources of raw materials and packing units of
KLABIN S.A., Santa Catarinas unit. The routes generated by the
Network Analyst were validated on the field and the information of
those routes confronted with the route practiced by the company
and those automatically generated by the GPS. The Network Analyst
extension has proved extremely efficient and with high potential
to generate new informations for the company but one should make a
careful economic analysis mostly taking into account what can be
saved with the freight of the new route and the total amount spent
to adapt the road. The GPS of the optimal route generation was
also satisfactory and showed the smallest deviation of the average
speed in the three comparisons. But the road generated by the
Network Analyst compared to GPS, generated better results, proving
                         the most economical.",
